Andrew Burningham designs and makes unique sculpture, mirror frames and bespoke furniture using a combination of hardwoods and metals.
Wood, with its beautiful range of colour and grain texture, provides him with an excellent material to convey ideas. Careful selection of contrasting features, highlighted by the play of light, are chosen to articulate particular surfaces. Hand carved elements, together with planished or patinated metals, are introduced to complete the story.
Andrew’s sculpture includes a series of ‘Residences for Discerning Birds’. These provide a vehicle to communicate his ideas which stem from an interest in birds and architecture. Inspiration also comes from the way found objects and recycled materials speak to him.
Each mirror frame design is developed to highlight the beauty of the materials. Use of hand cut veneers allows him to repeat patterns from the wood grain. Contrasting wood and metal inlays are recessed into the surface to provide geometrical elements and visual depth.
The incorporation of a variety of woods and inserts are a particular hallmark of his furniture designs. Each piece evolves as I integrate and balance the scale of different elements to the overall aesthetic.
It is essential to Andrew that the final result is well crafted.
