ANDREW CHEETHAM - ROSEDALE RESIDENCY EXHIBITIONAndrew Cheetham's exhibition was a great success, huge interest was shown in his drawings and Andrew has donated a large drawing of the kilns to the Rosedale Community.

Andrew Cheetham has spent a year exploring Rosedale and the
surrounding moors.
He has been documenting the remains of the iron ore mines and rows of cottages along with the marker stones and trods of the moors. He has also been working on paintings of the landscape capturing the effects of the changing seasons.
The exhibition featured drawings, paintings, sketchbooks and photographs, all produced during Andrew’s time in Rosedale.
The Inspired by Heritage project is funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, with additional support from Chrysalis Arts and the Mercer Art Gallery.
Andrew Cheetham’s residency is also supported by Rosedale Heritage Group and Ryedale District Council.

Fiona BowleyArtist in Residence at Studley Royal Water GardensSculptor Fiona Bowley has been keeping a diary on her Inspired by Heritage Residency, here's an excerpt...
"
MayIn the Studio I gather together photos and drawings.
Looking at the Abbey stonework helps me to translate the flat stretches of water into 3 dimensional forms.

Firstly I make tiny plasticine models combining and rejecting elements from my drawings. I begin to work up the models into stone as I’m eager to see the surfaces with tool marks and to see light playing on the curved forms."

Tessa BunneyArtist in Residence at Newby HallHere's an excerpt from Tessa's blog...
"April 24, 2009
gamekeeper n. a person employed to take care of game, as on an estate
Newby employs 2 gamekeepers (a headkeeper and an underkeeper) to
maintain their pheasant (and partridge) shoot. I’ve been fascinated by
gamekeeping for while, whilst working in Nidderdale I spent a lot of
time with the gamekeepers looking after the grouse moorland. As well as
the gamekeepers, shooting has a lot of other occupations on the actual
shoot days which have intriguing names associated with it: beater, flanker, birdman …
For a couple of mornings I’ve been following Jimmy, the underkeeper as he checks his trap line which consists of a series of fen traps laid
along the hedgerows around the estate to catch such as weasels, stoats,
rabbits, squirrels and rats.
Accompanied only by his gun for opportune
moments… he does this on foot every morning at this time of year and it
takes around 4 hours of brisk walking."

Tessa has started up a blog on her website for any
artists taking part in the Inspired by Heritage residency to use as a
point of inter communication. If you are one of the artists on the residency programme, feel free to join in at:

Andrew Cheetham Artist in residence at Rosedale AbbeyThe last few months have been spent exploring the Dale and surrounding moor. Walking, sketching and taking photographs, observing the onset of the seasons. Now that the weather has warmed Andrew has been working on larger pieces outside.

It has taken some time to get to know such a large area and find what interests him and the next stage will be the most exciting of the project.

Andrew had a very productive meeting with the headmistress of the
school in Rosedale. He organised sessions working with the children, including
one taking them out drawing the mines in September. A joint
exhibition showed Andrew and the children's work, as well as contributions from
local residents.
