Artist Profile: Andrew Cheetham

Andrew’s paintings and drawings could be described as documentary in that he prefers to work from life.

In the past he has focused on the former centres of Industry, the grandeur and dramatic beauty that he finds in the physical remains of our Industrial heritage.
His aim is to portray the majesty of decay.

Andrew has been documenting the Scarborough Fishing Industry since September 2000, in August 2004, he converted an empty baiting shed on the harbour’s West Pier into a studio.
During this period Andrew has witnessed Scarborough’s fishing fleet decline drastically.

Whilst at first the fishermen were wary of him - thinking he was checking their quotas when stood sketching them - they are now used to him drawing them at work and he has accompanied them out on their boats.

Throughout this time the sea has been a constant in Andrew’s work.
Constantly changing, constantly inspiring.
