Artist Profile: David Morris

David Morris was born in Knaresborough in 1937 and studied Painting and Printmaking at Harrogate School of Art. He continued his studies in Painting and Sculpture at the Slade School, London from 1959 – 61.

While pursuing his own painting practice he began teaching part-time at Bradford College of Art and at Harrogate College of Art. In 1963 he was appointed to teach full time at Harrogate where his teaching included responsibility for printmaking. This medium became of special interest to him as an artist.

Since retiring from full-time teaching in 1994 he has concentrated on his own work as painter and printmaker. His work follows in the strong tradition of English Landscape Painting, and etching is a medium that he enjoys and explores to the full. Observation and drawing at the heart of his work, the Yorkshire landscape providing much of the subject matter.

He has a long standing attachment to the Yorkshire coast, often working on the spot in less well known places like Port Mulgrave or Skinningrove and developing ideas further in his studio. Found objects also provide a starting point for his prints. These are sometimes modified and incorporated into the surface from which the print is made, creating an abstract image, rich in surface qualities.

David has exhibited in many mixed and group shows including the Royal West of England Academy, the Manchester Academy of Fine Art and the British Print Exhibitions at the Mall Galleries in London.
