My work centres around the landscapes and seascapes of Yorkshire, with a strong emphasis on sense of place, gestural marks and an evocative use of colour. I often spend time walking and sketching outdoors, therefore my paintings are not only a culmination of many literal recordings, but also the essence of colours and lines which become etched in the memory. The images I create lie somewhere between a reality we actually see in the landscape and one which exists only on the canvas plane – this reality is concerned with the resonance of one colour against another and the visual pleasure of lines, colours and forms interjecting with each other without the bind of direct representation.
In the studio I use oil and oil bars on canvas, and employ the methods of impasto painting, scraping back and building layers of texture to gradually create the paintings. In many ways this layering reflects the ever-changing conditions of weather, mood and light within the landscape. It also makes reference to the way in which the landscape is constantly regenerated and sculpted by both man and nature itself.
Since graduating in 2001 I have regularly exhibited and sold work across the U.K., and my work is held in many private collections both here and abroad.
